DESCRIPTION: Transferrin, a major plasma beta-globulin, is a monomeric glycoprotein found in plasma at an average concentration of 250 mg/100ml. As the specific iron-binding protein in plasma, it functions in the transportation and distribution of iron among the body organs, in iron metabolism, and in the prevention of iron loss via the kidneys. It is essential for iron utilization by the hemin -synthesizing reticulocytes and is stored in bone marrow as Tf-bound iron. It also possesses bacteriostatic and fungistatic activity. Clinically, decreases in transferrin are observed in congenital disorders, newborns, inflammatory diseases, hypoproteinemias, nephritic syndrome and conditions of protein loss. Increases are found in pregnancy, iron deficiency anemia, and inoculation hepatitis. Transferrin is an important transport factor used in defined culture media. It is required by cells in culture for maximal growth.
