Background:
Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathioneS-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Theseenzymes are involved in cellular defense against toxic, carcinogenic, and pharmacologically active electrophilic compounds. At present, eight distinct classes of the soluble cytoplasmicmammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta and zeta. This gene encodes aglutathione S-tranferase belonging to the alpha class genes thatare located in a cluster mapped to chromosome 6. Genes of the alphaclass are highly related and encode enzymes with glutathioneperoxidase activity. However, during evolution, this alpha classgene diverged accumulating mutations in the active site thatresulted in differences in substrate specificity and catalyticactivity. The enzyme encoded by this gene catalyzes the double bondisomerization of precursors for progesterone and testosteroneduring the biosynthesis of steroid hormones. An additionaltranscript variant has been identified, but its full lengthsequence has not been determined.
Other Names:
Collagen alpha-2(VIII) chain, Endothelial collagen, COL8A2
Gene Name: COL8A2
Gene ID: 1296
Primary Accession: P25067
Format: Peptides are lyophilized in a solid powder format. Peptides can be reconstituted in solution using the appropriate buffer as needed.
