Background:
This gene encodes a homeobox-containing transcriptionfactor that is the homolog to the 'empty spiracles' gene inDrosophila. Research on this gene in humans has focused on itsexpression in three tissues: dorsal telencephalon, olfactoryneuroepithelium, and urogenetial system. It is expressed in thedorsal telencephalon during development in a low rostral-lateral tohigh caudal-medial gradient and is proposed to pattern theneocortex into defined functional areas. It is also expressed inembryonic and adult olfactory neuroepithelia where it complexeswith eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) andpossibly regulates mRNA transport or translation. In the developingurogenital system, it is expressed in epithelial tissues and isnegatively regulated by HOXA10. Alternative splicing results inmultiple transcript variants encoding distinct proteins.
