Escherichia coli J5 (Rc mutant) (ATCC) was grown in nutrient agar. Culture was centrifuge, washed and the precipitated bacteria were aliquoted. and autoclaved at 121°C. For immunization the bacteria were suspended in isotonic saline at 1010 cfu./ml.
