Escherichia coli J5 (Rc mutant) (ATCC) was grown in nutrient agar. Culture was centrifuge, washed and the precipitated bacteria were aliquoted. For immunization the bacteria were suspended in isotonic saline and treated with a sufficient quantity of ampicilin to break down the cells.
