Background:
Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) andneurturin (NTN) are two structurally related, potent neurotrophicfactors that play key roles in the control of neuron survival anddifferentiation. The protein encoded by this gene is a member ofthe GDNF receptor family. It is aglycosylphosphatidylinositol(GPI)-linked cell surface receptor forboth GDNF and NTN, and mediates activation of the RET tyrosinekinase receptor. This encoded protein acts preferentially as areceptor for NTN compared to its other family member, GDNF familyreceptor alpha 1. This gene is a candidate gene for RET-associateddiseases. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoformshave been found for this gene.
