Protein Family: Hormones
Pathway and Disease: Lipid Metabolism, Metabolic Disorders, Signal Transduction, Signaling Molecules and Interaction
Alternate Names: Ghrelin; appetite-regulating hormone; growth hormone secretagogue; growth hormone-releasing peptide; motilin-related peptide; M46 protein; ghrelin-28; GHRL; MTLRP; GHRP
Accession No.: Q9UBU3
Description:
Ghrelin (also called Ghrelin-28) is the ligand for growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1 (GHSR). Ghrelin induces the release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. Ghrelin has an appetite-stimulating effect, induces adiposity and stimulates gastric acid secretion. The 117-aa Ghrelin precursor, the growth hormone-releasing peptide (GHRP), is cleaved into 3 chains: Ghrelin-27 (27 aa), Ghrelin-28 (28 aa) and obestatin (23 aa). Ghrelin-28 is a 28-aa peptide modified by O-octanoylation or O-decanoylation essential for activity. The O-decanoylated forms Ghrelin-27-C10 and Ghrelin-28-C10 differ in the length of the carbon backbone of the carboxylic acid bound to Ser-26. Cat. No. 350193 corresponds to the Ghrelin-28-C8 form.
