Histones play a critical role in transcriptionalregulation, cell cycle progression, and developmental events.Histone acetylation/deacetylation alters chromosome structure andaffects transcription factor access to DNA. The protein encoded bythis gene has sequence homology to members of the histonedeacetylase family. This gene is orthologous to mouse HDAC7 genewhose protein promotes repression mediated via the transcriptionalcorepressor SMRT. Alternatively spliced transcript variantsencoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
