Background:
Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteinscomposed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. ITGAE encodes anI-domain-containing alpha integrin that undergoespost-translational cleavage in the extracellular domain, yieldingdisulfide-linked heavy and light chains. In combination with thebeta 7 integrin, this protein forms the E-cadherin binding integrinknown as the human mucosal lymphocyte-1 antigen. This protein ispreferentially expressed in human intestinal intraepitheliallymphocytes (IEL), and in addition to a role in adhesion, it mayserve as an accessory molecule for IEL activation.
