Background:
Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdivided into epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This protein belongs to a family of keratins that are specifically expressed in the inner root sheath of hair follicles.

Specificity:
The antiserum stains specifically the Huxley layer of the inner root sheath (irs) of the hair follicle (from matrix to end of irs). Although there is a considerable sequence homology of keratin K74 polypeptide to keratins K5 and K6, no crossreactivity was observed with Western blotting and immunofluorescence microscopy.
