Background:
The protein encoded by this gene is one of the highlyconserved mini-chromosome maintenance proteins (MCM) that areessential for the initiation of eukaryotic genome replication. Thehexameric protein complex formed by the MCM proteins is a keycomponent of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC) and may beinvolved in the formation of replication forks and in therecruitment of other DNA replication related proteins. This proteincontains the central domain that is conserved among the MCMproteins. This protein has been shown to co-immunoprecipitate withMCM4, 6 and 7, which suggests that it may interact with other MCMproteins and play a role in DNA replication. Alternatively splicedtranscript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described.
