This protein is a transcription factor that negativelyregulates other myogenic family proteins. Studies of the mousehomolog, I-mf, show that it interferes with myogenic factorfunction by masking nuclear localization signals and preventing DNAbinding. Knockout mouse studies show defects in the formation ofvertebrae and ribs that also involve cartilage formation in thesestructures.
