Background:
Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family areinvolved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normalphysiological processes, such as embryonic development,reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in diseaseprocesses, such as arthritis and metastasis. Most MMP's aresecreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleavedby extracellular proteinases. However, the enzyme encoded by thisgene is activated intracellularly by furin within the constitutivesecretory pathway. Also in contrast to other MMP's, this enzymecleaves alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor but weakly degrades structuralproteins of the extracellular matrix.
