Protein Family: Hormones

Pathway and Disease: Endocrine System

Alternate Names: Procalcitonin, PCT, CALC1, Calcitonin precursor, Calcitonin preproproteinDescription:
Procalcitonin is a peptide hormone mainly produced by the C cells of the thyroid and certain endocrine cells of the lung. Under normal expression conditions, procalcitonin is immediately cleaved into three specific fragments, an N terminal residue, calcitonin and katacalcin. Levels of unprocessed procalcitonin rise significantly after bacterial infection, trauma or shock. Calcitonin causes a rapid but short-lived drop in the level of calcium and phosphate in blood by promoting the incorporation of these ions in bone. Recombinant procalcitonin comprises a 114 amino acid fragment (3-116) corresponding to the unprocessed procalcitonin protein and is expressed in E. coli with an amino-terminal hexahistidine
