Background:
The DNA-associated protein encoded by this gene is amember of the paired family of homeobox proteins. Expression islocalized to proliferating fetal fibroblasts and the developingdermal layer, with downregulated expression in adult skin.Increases in expression of this gene during fetal but not adultwound healing suggest a possible role in mechanisms that controlmammalian dermal regeneration and prevent formation of scarresponse to wounding. The expression patterns provide evidenceconsistent with a role in fetal skin development and a possiblerole in cellular proliferation.
