Background:
The human pregnancy-specific glycoproteins (PSGs) are afamily of proteins that are synthesized in large amounts byplacental trophoblasts and released into the maternal circulationduring pregnancy. Molecular cloning and analysis of several PSGgenes has indicated that the PSGs form a subgroup of thecarcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, which belongs to theimmunoglobulin superfamily of genes. Members of the CEA familyconsist of a single N domain, with structural similarity to theimmunoglobulin variable domains, followed by a variable number ofimmunoglobulin constant-like A and/or B domains. Most PSGs have anarg-gly-asp (RGD) motif, which has been shown to function as anadhesion recognition signal for several integrins, in theN-terminal domain (summary by Teglund et al., 1994 [PubMed7851896]). For additional general information about the PSG genefamily, see PSG1 (MIM 176390).
