Background:
The protein encoded by this gene contains a RING-H2finger, a motif known to be involved in protein-protein andprotein-DNA interactions. This gene is highly expressed in normalcerebellum, but not in the cerebral cortex. The expression of therat counterpart in the frontal cortex and hippocampus was shown tobe induced by elctroconvulsive treatment (ECT) as well as chronicantidepressant treatment, suggesting that this gene may be amolecular target for ECT and antidepressants. The protein is aubiquitin ligase that functions in the endoplasmicreticulum-associated degradation pathway. Alternative splicing ofthis gene results in multiple transcript variants. Read-throughtranscription also exists between this gene and the downstreamVPS24 (vacuolar protein sorting 24 homolog) gene. [provided byRefSeq].
