Background:
The correlation of anti-sperm antibodies with cases ofunexplained infertility implicates a role for these antibodies inblocking fertilization. Improved diagnosis and treatment ofimmunologic infertility, as well as identification of proteins fortargeted contraception, are dependent on the identification andcharacterization of relevant sperm antigens. The protein expressedby this gene is recognized by anti-sperm antibodies from infertilemales. Furthermore, antibodies generated against the recombinantprotein block in vitro fertilization. This protein localizes to theacrosomal membrane of spermatids and mature spermatozoa where it isthought to play a role in acrosomal morphogenesis and in sperm-eggbinding and fusion, respectively.
