Background:
This gene encodes a member of the sirtuin family ofproteins, homologs to the yeast Sir2 protein. Members of thesirtuin family are characterized by a sirtuin core domain andgrouped into four classes. The functions of human sirtuins have notyet been determined; however, yeast sirtuin proteins are known toregulate epigenetic gene silencing and suppress recombination ofrDNA. Studies suggest that the human sirtuins may function asintracellular regulatory proteins with mono-ADP-ribosyltransferaseactivity. The protein encoded by this gene is included in class IIIof the sirtuin family. Alternative splicing of this gene results inmultiple transcript variants.
