The nuclearform, known as structural maintenance of chromosomes 3, is acomponent of the multimeric cohesin complex that holds togethersister chromatids during mitosis, enabling proper chromosomesegregation. Post-translational modification of the encoded proteinby the addition of chondroitin sulfate chains gives rise to thesecreted proteoglycan bamacan, an abundant basement membraneprotein.
