Background:
TCF4 is transcription factor 4, a basichelix-turn-helix transcription factor. The encoded proteinrecognizes an Ephrussi-box ('E-box') binding site ('CANNTG') - amotif first identified in immunoglobulin enhancers. This gene isexpressed predominantly in pre-B-cells, although it is found inother tissues as well. Defects in this gene are a cause ofPitt-Hopkins syndrome.
