Background:
Transglutaminases are enzymes that catalyze thecrosslinking of proteins by epsilon-gamma glutamyl lysineisopeptide bonds. While the primary structure of transglutaminasesis not conserved, they all have the same amino acid sequence attheir active sites and their activity is calcium-dependent. Theprotein encoded by this gene consists of two polypeptide chainsactivated from a single precursor protein by proteolysis. Theencoded protein is involved the later stages of cell envelopeformation in the epidermis and hair follicle.
