Background:
This gene encodes a member of the tubby gene family ofbipartite transcription factors. Members of this family have beenidentified in plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates, and theyshare a conserved N-terminal transcription activation region and aconserved C-terminal DNA and phosphatidylinositol-phosphate bindingregion. The encoded protein binds to phosphoinositides in theplasma membrane via its C-terminal region and probably functions asa membrane-bound transcription regulator that translocates to thenucleus in response to phosphoinositide hydrolysis, for instance,induced by G-protein-coupled-receptor signaling. It plays animportant role in neuronal development and function. Two transcriptvariants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for thisgene.
