Visfatin is an adipokine produced by visceral adipose tissue. Visfatin is thought to be a natural insulin mimetic as it has been shown to bind to insulin receptors in liver, muscle, and fat. Increased circulating plasma levels are thought to play critical roles in metabolic syndromes such as obesity and diabetes. Visfatin is expressed in E. coli with an amino-terminal hexahistidine tag.
